THE defence of genocide-suspect ex-Rwandan minister for commerce, Justin Mugenzi, has complained to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR)
THE defence of genocide-suspect ex-Rwandan minister for commerce, Justin Mugenzi, has complained to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) over the Rwandan government's failure to transfer a witness to Arusha to testify as ordered by the UN Court recently. The trial chamber trying Mugenzi and three other former cabinet ministers for their role in the 1994 mass killings in Rwanda, had on April 13 ordered Rwanda to transfer Ms Agnes Ntamabyariro, who is held in detention in Rwanda. "The Rwandan government is bullying us and we are being too timid," claimed Mugenzi's co-counsel, Mr Jonathan Kirk, before the court. Mr Kirk went on to ask the judges to summon the Rwandan special representative to ICTR, Alloys Mutabingwa, to appear before it and explain why Ntamabyariro had not been brought to Arusha as directed by the judges. His motion was supported by all the defence teams. The trial chamber reserved its ruling on the request to summon the Rwandan envoy to a later date
